Boutoniere ideas…
The tradition of the boutonnière came to us from the French, where it was
traditionally placed in the buttonhole of the man’s suit or tuxedo. Nowadays, the
boutonnière is pinned directly to the man’s suit lapel. A bridal bouquet and the
boutonnière were first said to ward off diseases and evil spirits. Now in 2012 many
couples keep with tradition and continue to display the bundles of flowers on the
lapel of the groom and groomsmen, fathers, grandfathers and ushers for old times
sake.
Usually, florists are in charge of creating the boutonnière and arrange a few
blooms and bundle them together. It is always a nice touch to pull flowers from the
bride and bridesmaid bouquets to create a cohesive look. However, the modern
boutonnière has changed over the years. Many couples have leaned towards
more “do-it-yourself” designs in recent years and the sky is the limit when it comes
to accessories for your wedding.
Check out this DIY burlap boutonnière from www.greenweddingshoes.com. This
would be such a fun project for the bride and her bridesmaids! The materials
needed to make this statement piece are:
• Burlap
• Cereal box-weight cardboard
• Three kinds of buttons, one of each on each boutonniere
• Two kinds of feathers
• Pin backs
• Natural jewelry cord
• Elmer’s Glue
• Hot glue gun
• 3/4 wide ribbon
• Embroidery floss and big needle (optional)
• Sturdy bamboo skewers

This is a very modern take on a traditional flower boutonnière. Try using succulents and billy bobs to brighten up your look. Photo from www.greenweddingshoes.com and photo credit Katherine O’Brien Photography.

Try using feathers as the spotlight of your man’s boutonnière. Choosing a variety of sizes and colors create a very whimsical and unique look. Photo credit: Pomp & Plumage

Wedding Planning- Invitations!
Not just any wedding invitation will do! They need to:
-emulate your personality,
-appropriately match your wedding theme,
-have all the details you want to make them absolutely perfect.
When deciding on invitations, all the establishments I visited in Nashville told me essentially the same thing:
“The bride should have an idea of what she does and does not like, so that she knows what to look for and what to disregard. She should know what type of wedding she is having, so that the invitations mirror that atmosphere she is trying to create. Usually, the stores will have sample albums for the brides to flip through so that they can mark what catches their eye. Additionally, she needs a rough budget and a rough estimate on the amount needed.
Here are some places I visited:
Paper Source
Located at 4017 Hillsboro Pike in Green Hills, Paper Source is one option worth checking out. This particular store location has been around since August 2011 and it is store number 45 of of 52 stores in the nation. The first store was founded in 1984 in Chicago, Illinois by Sue Lindstrom. Its third party vendors include names like William Arthur, Vera Wang, and Crane and Company.
When choosing invitations, brides first choose from the innumerable colored paper that are made and manufactured by Paper Source. The unique thing about the business is that the creation process is interactive. In fact, if you are craft-savvy, the most you may have to pay for your invitations is the cost of the supplies themselves. Kristine Hewitt, the store manager I spoke with, did caution me, “If a customer is unfamiliar with typeset, she should not start with that, considering how quickly correction costs can escalate.”
Different details can make your invitation one-of-a-kind, including stamps, prints, pockets, strings, color, and motifs. Another aspect about the business that makes it cool is that you are able to use the designs you choose for not only your invitations, but also for your thank-you notes and favor boxes, if you so desire. Prices for each invitation can be anywhere from $1 to $20. It all simply depends on the details specified.
Be sure to keep Paper Source in mind when you are wanting to channel your creative side for your wedding planning. Visit Paper Source at www.paper-source.com.
Social Graces
Cori Lecain is the artist and designer behind the invitations made at Social Graces. Social Graces is a locally owned business in Nashville that has been around about four years. This cute little gem can be found at 1704 21st Avenue South. Smock and Bella Figura are two of Social Graces’ favorite vendors to work with.
Kelly Williams was an invitation specialist I spoke with. She told me that it is most helpful when brides have specific ideas. Then she can work with the client to hone in on the exact image the bride has set in her mind. After going through the albums, the customer has a choice between going with a standard or custom design. The customer will then put fifty percent down on the cost. The total amount can cost anywhere from $100 to $1000. It all depends on the vendor chosen, the number of invites, and the customization details.
If you want wedding invitations done with artistic expertise, Social Graces just might be the place to go. Check it out at www.socialgracesonline.com.
Rock Paper Scissors
Locally owned and operated in Franklin at 317 Main Street, Suite 110, Rock Paper Scissors was my personal favorite. While it is the only store of its kind, its custom designs can be found within other stores around the country. This business has been around about ten years. The owner, Lauren Rauter, majored in Fashion and Textiles. She moved to Nashville with her husband and opened a stationary store, working with vendors like Dabney Lee and Haute Papier. It was her desire to bring the chic, sophisticated vibe of New York to middle Tennessee. After personally visiting the store, I’d say she did a job well-done.
The store is unique because all the design work is done within the four wall of the business. Christa Hall, the store manager, told me their signature style is “vintage chic,” but that does not mean their versatility is limited. She also stated that they always ask when the wedding date is so that they can know how the production process should progress. Proofing can take time, after all.
Another unique characteristic is that the design the bride uses for her invitations can also be used for coasters, napkins, gift tag, thank-you cards, and signs. If the bride wishes to carry her theme out further beyond her invitations, she has that opportunity to maintain continuity in her nuptial details.
The prices of the invitations depend on quantity, just like any other store. Twenty-five to fifty invites can be around $150, Christa estimated. This, of course, depends on what the bride wants for her invitations. Flat-printing is the cheaper option, while embossing or letter-printing increases the price.
Rock Paper Scissors has something great to offer you! See for yourself at www.rockpaperscissor.com.
Happy Planning!

Carnton Plantation- Picturesque Wedding Venue
This week I had the chance to visit the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Carnton is full of interesting history and picturesque locations for both ceremonies and receptions. I talked with Leigh, the special events coordinator, about options and advantages for weddings at Carnton. The property is extremely versatile which provides brides the ability to make their unique wedding vision into a reality.
The first option for your wedding ceremony is the historical plantation home, which was built in 1826. Many couples get married in front of the home, which was owned by the Gavock family during the Battle of Franklin. It is also possible to use the lower Greek revival porch for a cocktail hour for the guests. For further entertainment you even have the option of having the house opened for the guests to take a look around. It’s also a great place to take your wedding photos!
The second option for your wedding ceremony is the plantation garden. This is a wonderful place for a springtime wedding. The garden is magnificent when the flowers are in bloom!
The open pasture behind the plantation home is one option for your wedding reception. The other option for your wedding reception is the Fleming center, which has a large brick patio. Both of these locations are perfect canvases for the creation of a one of a kind reception.

Olia's beautiful "Treasure" gown is showcased in the bridal room. The spacious room is equipped with plenty of mirrors, great lighting, bathrooms, a shower, and even a mini fridge.
A few photos from some past weddings at Carnton Plantation:
