“I’m not writing to enter this contest for myself, but for the future wife of my oldest son. Katie is a phenomenal young lady who has loved my son for four years now. They met through one of her girlfriends, who worked with my son. Katie is a beautiful girl, and if you just looked at her you wouldn’t think there were any physical problems that she was dealing with. But, in fact, she deals with a horrible condition called Gastroparesis. This awful disease works on the nerves in her stomach and prevents her stomach from moving food into her intestines. She was diagnosed last year, before she and Jon were engaged. She has been such a tremendous example of strength throughout her sickness. She has learned how to cope with her illness, what foods to stay away from, etc., and like I said earlier, you wouldn’t even know anything was wrong by just looking at her. She has to be very careful about what she eats and to be sure to take her medication, and she handles everything with such grace and dignity. If I could have my pick of any young lady to be the bride of my son, I would pick Katie. She loves him so well, and is perfect for him. They have a dedication to each other that is rarely found in people as young as they are. They put each other’s needs above their own, and only want the best for each other. Jon has helped her through this illness, caring for her while she finished her last semester of college at UT/Chattanooga, and their love has grown even stronger than it was before her diagnosis. Jon and Katie have a beautiful relationship built on love and caring, and I know that they will have a strong marriage together. She is going to make a beauitful bride. I would love for her to be considered for the bridal gown give-away. In my book, she is most deserving and would be an excellent choice if she is chosen for your designs!

Along the way, we’ve laughed and fought, made homes of small apartments, raised two children (technically they’re a Lab and a rescued Pit Bull mix, but don’t tell them that), supported each other through school, experienced the births and deaths of loved ones, and even recovered from a breakup. In order to save money, webought the sample gown, but it means I have a lot of weight to lose in very little time! I’m stressed beyond belief! Having a custom gown would mean I could start focusing on what’s important in the wedding: marrying the man I love in front of the family and friends I love.”

“I work as a community organizer to help raise elementary literacy in high minority, high poverty schools. It is very rewarding work, but it does not pay much. I meet with people who often live in impoverished communities and help them empower themselves. It is very inspiring for me to see some of my leaders hold their own with public officials, like the mayor, superintendent, county commissioners, etc. when they are negotiating for affordable housing (we got county commissioners to pledge $19.4 million to affordable housing and so far over 1,469 units have been created), local hiring ordinances (the mayor agreed to push for a percentage of ex offenders to be hired on large city contracts), in jail rehabilitation programs (which the Sheriff started last October and it has been increasing by 10 people every month), and other issues that affect their lives. I went to the University of Michigan and graduated with a degree in Economics, but realized that I was often taught to maximize profits, minimize costs, but not to look at the humanity and morals of the situation. I recently got engaged to the most amazing man, but he is in a lot of debt from college himself. I was planning on spending less than $200 on a long white dress to save us money. It would be amazing to be chosen to try to win a beautiful wedding dress! “

How did you and your husband meet?

We met through friends and we were just buddies at first.

How did he “pop the question?”

Brian rang my doorbell a series of times, leaving little presents each time. The first was my favorite candle from Anthropologie and a note that said, “Light this.” The second was a book that he had made me that had pictures of us, our inside jokes, and bible verses inside. With this he left a note that said, “Read this.” The third time he left a bottle of Champagne and 2 flutes with a note that said “Open this.” The fourth time the doorbell rang, he was standing there with a ring and a sign that said, “Marry this?”

Tell us all about your wedding day!

It was supposed to be 80 degrees, but it turned out to be 50! My poor bridesmaids were turning blue! The ceremony was outside on top of a hill with an amazing view. We had the reception in a beautiful newly built barn. All of the people we loved were in the same room at the same time, we loved it! We had a taco bar and margaritas at the reception, and home brewed beer as well we called “Briffany Brown Ale.”The bridesmaids performed a rap song at the reception that was written by the bride and maid of honor almost 10 years ago! It was hilarious. The best part about the whole day was the sendoff-party horns and getting into an old white truck. So fun!

What are some of your favorite memories from your big day?

Seeing each other for the first time, being pronounced husband and wife, the random gunshots from the nearby neighbors and the pastor saying, “well that’s a Tennessee Amen!” the first kiss, the speeches at the wedding, and the send off!

Do you have any words of wisdom for future brides?

Ask for stamps at your bridal shower. I bought so many stamps throughout the whole process.

How did you decide on your Olia dress?

After trying on a million dresses, it was the first dress I tried on that I loved absolutely EVERYTHING about it.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

A boutique resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

How is married life?

It is so fun! It really is like having a sleepover every night with your best friend!

How did you and your husband meet?
Dan and I met on a Service trip to NYC during our Junior Year at Belmont University.

How did your husband propose to you?
Dan proposed a few days before Christmas 2011.  We had agreed to spend Christmas with our families that year and with mine being in Orlando and his in St. Louis we were very far apart.  A few days before Christmas I came home to a blue Tiffany’s box and when I opened the box there was a champagne glass that had “Meet me at the Dock” engraved on it.  I quickly went to the backyard of my parent’s house to find the whole yard and lake dock covered in candles.  “God Gave Me You” by Dave Barnes was playing in the background.  When I got down to the dock Dan was there and on one knee!

Tell us about your special day!
The best way I can describe our day was elegant, relaxed, and fun.  Our service was in a beautiful church in Downtown Nashville, it had incredible acoustics.  Our friends did all the music for the ceremony, and they are so talented!  I incorporated a lot of lavender in all of my flowers, so it was a relaxing aroma throughout the day.  It was so special to us to have all of our family and friends in one place, we were so overwhelmed with the support and love we felt on that day.

What are some of your favorite moments of the day?
Our first look was a very emotional time, but it was great that we got to spend that time together.  I think seeing each other helped calm our nerves.  I remember walking down the aisle was a very surreal moment.  The father- daughter dance was beautiful.  My Dad surprised me with a song that was written about me!  The lyrics were so special and personal, I basically cried through most of it.

Any advice for future brides?
Someone told me to only care about a few things for the day and everything else will happen like it should.  In the end for us it was the people who were apart of it.  Our friends and family helped a lot and it would not have turned out as beautiful and meaningful as it did.

How did you decide on your Olia dress?
A good friend of mine was engaged and had just chosen an Olia dress for her wedding.  So we happen to stop by and look at her shop together.  I had already shopped at a few stores and gone through a dozen dresses.  Once I put on the Victorian lace I felt so comfortable.  I felt like myself in the dress and it’s so unique and vintage looking.  I couldn’t stop thinking about the dress for weeks and that’s when I knew it was the one.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We went to Isla Mujeres, Mexico for eight days.  It’s a small island off the coast of Cancun.

What is married life like?
We love married life.  It’s so great to have a partner in life and build a life together.  We’re only two months in, but it has been an amazing adventure so far!

How did you and your husband meet?

I met Matt my very first day as a graduate assistant Athletic Trainer at Southern Illinois University. Over the next two years I saw Matt around the Athletic Training Room, and at different social events.  He and I shared a love for movies, and quoting various lines at each other to see if we could trick the other.  Matt was a huge Univ of Michigan fan and decided to team up with a mutual friend and “break into” my apartment and steal my Illinois flag!  Following up that with a goose chase ending in ransom notes on Halloween. Needless to say, we became very good friends, but it wasn’t until right before I left for my new job at Eastern Illinois Univ. that we both realized that maybe our friendship was a little more than friends.

How did your man “pop the question?”

Leave it to me-I ruined his whole plan.

I was supposed to be out shopping with a friend that Friday, and Matt had planned to set everything up before I got home.  I wasn’t feeling well that morning, so I cancelled the plans. Matt kept telling me they had added some surgeries, and he would be late.  About 5 o’clock he called and said he had picked up a surprise,but he had to set it up, so I went and rested in the bedroom.

As my anticipation built, he took his sweet old time.  Finally, he walked through the door carrying the most adorable little Boxer puppy I had ever seen.  As we went out into the living room I saw candles on our coffee table, and “Marry Me” spelled out in sushi!  Now..I admit, I was a little smitten with my new puppy and it took me a minute to realize what was actually happening.  When I turned to look at him, he had the ring out and asked me to marry him.
The rest is clear! I said “YES” and off we are with the planning.

Tell us about your special day!

Our wedding day was absolutely wonderful.  We actually flew to Grand Cayman 5 days prior to our wedding day and spent time with our wonderful friends and family.  The next morning, we didn’t see each other, and we just went about getting ready as planned.  We planned to have our “reveal.”  Everything went as planned-I was choked up as stood on our balcony staring at the man I was going to marry, waiting for me in the beach chair.  It was wonderful.  We had a few pictures on initial reveal, and then got ready to drive to other locations on the island.  As we walked out the door, it began to downpour rain.  We were ushered to the car under umbrellas and took off- by the time we got to our next location – it was sunny and dry! My brother walked me down the aisle, and we said our vows while looking at the most beautiful ocean view I can imagine.  As we stepped over to sign the marriage license, a sprinkle began.  We signed and all rushed inside.  I whispered – that at least I knew my dad was watching, and cried a little in approval.  The rest of the evening was filled with amazing friends, family, food and drinks.

What are some of your favorite moments of the day?

When I walked out the door to see Matt in the beach chair waiting to see each other for the first time.  It took my breath away.

At the end of the night, the bridal party and a few others were hot and wanted to cool off – so they jumped right in the pool- a few dresses and all!!

Any words of wisdom for future brides?

Savor that moment as you walk down the aisle to take the hand of your soon to be husband.  No matter how slow you feel like you are going, you will want to savor that last moment with your father (or for me my brother) as a single woman.

Tell us about your Olia Zavozina experience.

I actually met Olia while I was in St. Louis doing 2 days of dress trials.  My Matron of Honor was on here way from out of town, and therefore I was at the first store alone.  Olia was having a trunk show that day, and when she came in she just sat down in my corner and started helping me decide and critique which ones looked the best.  My final decision came down to one of her dresses at that store, and a dress from the day before.  It took a very long time to decide, but I did go with the other dress simply because of the location we were having the wedding and I went more casual.

This is however, how I decided to have Olia make the suits for Matt and his groomsmen.  And they were absolutely gorgeous!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We stayed in Grand Cayman following the wedding for 5 more days and had an amazing time.  We relaxed, went sightseeing and shared an amazing time together with another couple that I love dearly.

How is married life treating you?

My favorite thing to say, and I’m still not used to it is “That’s my husband”   He is a wonderful man and I am lucky to have him in my life forever.  Marriage takes work from 2 people and a wonderful support system to help you through.  I enjoy seeing us change together each and every day.

How did you and your husband meet?

We met at work. When we first met, we worked very closely together (and were not dating!) When my husband got a promotion and moved to a different division, he asked me out.

How did he pop the question?

We had only been dating for about 5 months when he proposed in January of 2012! He surprised me big time. We had plans to have dinner with friends (or so I thought) on a Friday night. I was planning to go home and get ready after work-I had not gone to work looking my best that day! He orchestrated all sorts of things behind the scenes to get into my apartment before I got there and make sure I arrived at just the right time. When I got home, I found my living room full of candlelight, music, and my guy all dressed up ready to propose!

Tell us about your special day!

We got married on a beautiful early fall day this September. We planned an early evening ceremony at The Village Chapel near Hillsboro Village. It’s a beautiful old building that was originally a convent, then a school, and is now used by a church and various small businesses. It is simple and elegant and was the perfect place to get married! Joe and I chose to see each other privately before the ceremony, and we did that in the room where we would get married that night. Afterwards, we had a “rustic glam” reception at ONE at Cannery Row. (It’s a new venue on the 3rd floor of the building that houses Cannery Row and Mercy Lounge. It just opened this year. If you are looking for a venue, check it out! We loved it!)

What are some of your favorite moments of the day?

My favorite moments of the day were: When Joe and I saw each other for the first time. It was such a sweet and special moment to get to see each other privately before all the craziness started! He looked so handsome in his tux, and he thought I looked beautiful. He said my dress was “the most awesome wedding dress he’d ever seen.”

The moments we were sharing our vows were so sweet and wonderful. I definitely got a little emotional! I also loved when friends and family shared toasts at the wedding…it was so great to hear some of our closest friends and family encourage us!

6. Any advice for future brides?

If you can get a wedding planner, do it. Everyone says “enjoy this time”…and sometimes it’s hard because there’s so much to do! If getting a wedding planner isn’t in your budget, delegate! Your mom and your friends want to help you during this time (within reason!) Let them. Make sure your fiancée feels involved in the planning too…even if you just delegate some easy things to him. Better than being so stressed out you bite his head off! Anything you can do to minimize your stress level is a good thing. Try to keep everything you’re planning really organized. And always keep the end goal in mind…at the end of that day, you want to end up married to the love of your life. In 10 years, I doubt I’ll remember what flavors the cakes were or which napkin rings we used.

How did you decide on your Olia dress?

My mom came in town quickly after we got engaged. She and I and two of my closest friends went to about 4 places in one day! When we came in Olia, the atmosphere was so different from all the other stores. It was so pretty and relaxing and everyone was SO nice. I tried on several dresses in OZ, but I just felt so pretty in the one I picked! It was super elegant and classic while still being really unique. No other dress I tried on compared to it! I kind of want to go get it out of the closest right now and put it on.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

We went to Maya Riviera in Mexico near Playa del Carmen. We wanted to pick somewhere pretty where we could just completely relax, and bingo! We explored the area a bit but mostly just relaxed and had a great time at our all-inclusive resort.

How is married life?

Married life is awesome! I love getting to see my best friend every day and knowing we are a team. We have such a great time and are so grateful to be with each other.

How did you and your husband meet?

Taylor and I met on the first day of 6th grade, 12 years ago. We went to every school dance together and started dating our sophomore year. Taylor went to Auburn and I went to Miami of Ohio, so we did the long distance thing for 4 years until finally moving back to Nashville after college.

When and how did he propose?

Taylor proposed about a year ago, just before Thanksgiving. He told me he wanted to go for a walk at the park, which is something we both love to do, so I didn’t suspect anything out of the ordinary. After our walk at Percy Warner Park, we got back in the car and Taylor handed me a blindfold, saying he had a surprise. I tried staying calm for our short drive to Love Circle, but my mind was racing. When Taylor took my blindfold off, I opened my eyes to a stunning view of the city and that’s where Taylor asked me to marry him! I was totally surprised and completely overjoyed!

What was your wedding day like? Tell us about your day!

Our wedding was the most fun day of our lives! We got married at Steeplechase and it was amazing. We are both outdoorsy people so I knew we wanted to get married outside. The rolling hills and beautiful fall trees there made this the perfect setting for our big day. Everything went by in such a blur, I really had to make myself stop and absorb everything that was happening. All our friends and family had gathered to commemorate this huge thing in Taylor and I’s life and we had a blast dancing, eating and celebrating together long into the night.

How did you decide on your Olia dress?

Olia’s was the first place I went to try on my dress. I tried on 3 dresses and knew I wouldn’t be looking anywhere else. Olia’s team was able to take parts of my grandmother’s wedding dress from the 50s and use it as the bottom of my gorgeous lace dress. It was so special to me to be able to honor my family and my grandmother in the dress that I wore on my wedding. Olia’s team was fabulous in designing a dress that was even better than what I had in my head. The execution and creativity at Olia’s is something I knew I wouldn’t find anywhere else, I can’t imagine getting my wedding dress from anyone else!

What are some of your favorite moments of the day?

Getting ready at my house with my bridesmaids was a special time for us all to be together one last time. It was so fun to have some girl time before things got hectic.

Seeing my husband at our first look is something I will never forget! It was such a special moment for us to share and really enjoy together, away from the craziness going on around us.

The reception was literally the most fun thing I’ve been to in my life! Everyone was so excited and we had a blast out on the dance floor, taking goofy pictures in the photo booth and soaking up all the joy and love that was there that day.

Any advice for future brides?

Don’t loose perspective of what’s important. It’s so easy to get caught up in the million little details that go into planning a wedding, and all the little things that can go wrong on the wedding day. But at the end of the day, you will be married to your best friend and that is all that matters! It’s not worth stressing out about little things no one will remember. Instead, focus on enjoying your wedding day, because once it’s over, it’s over!

Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Taylor surprised me with a honeymoon to Aruba! We enjoyed a fabulous week there, and can’t wait to go back!

What is married life like?

Being married is just the best! You get to hang out with your best friend all the time- what can be better than that?
